Magnitogorsk, a city in the Chelyabinsk region with a population of 425 thousand, is located on the banks of the Ural river. The peculiarity of Magnitogorsk is that is situated on two parts of the world - in Europe and Asia, on both sides of Ural river. It was founded in 1929 because of the building of the Magnitogorsk metallurgical complex and was raised into the status of a city in 1931. Built under the first Five-Year Plan on the site of iron deposits, the city became a symbol of Soviet industrial growth. Magnitogorsk was a leading steel manufacturer during World War II, and though it is still a major metallurgical center, steel production has declined sharply. Nevertheless the present Magnitogorsk is one of the largest centres of metallurgical industry in Russia. The city center occupies a vast territory between the embankment park zone and K.Marx prospect, from the drama theatre to the Cossack crossing. At the end of the 20th century Magnitogorsk has stopped its development and is waiting for further events. What will happen with the city? Nobody will tell. One is doubtless: architecture was, is and will be the reflection of the epoch. Magnitka is a wonderful monument in the Soviet history.
