Chelyabinsk is a Russian city just to the east of the Ural Mountains, on the Mias River. It is the administrative center of Chelyabinsk region. It also lies on the Trans-Siberian RR. Founded in 1736 as a Russian frontier outpost, it was chartered in the 1740s and grew into an agricultural and coal-trading town. Its industrial growth began with the building of its first steel plant in 1930. Chelyabinsk takes the advantageous economic, geographical and strategic position connecting Ural with the central part of Russia, Siberia, Kazakhstan. Chelyabinsk is one of the most developed cities of the Russian Federation. The basic industries are the metallurgical, machine-building and metal-cutting industries, the fuel and energy building and agroindustrial complexes. There are 10 theatres and concert halls, 28 museums, a network of palaces of culture, clubs, libraries and musical schools in Chelyabinsk. In the city there are more than 300 historical monuments, 1500 archaeological monuments. Two of them are of world value. All this is a splendid basis for development of tourism including that of international. Such cities as Minyar, Magnitogorsk, Troitsk, Chelyabinsk, Verkhneuralsk, Zlatoust, Kasli, Kyshtym were included in "the List of the historical populated places of Russia" in 1990
